Published in 1897, Bram Stoker’s Dracula is not just an iconic gothic horror story that introduced us to the most famous vampire of them all: Count Dracula.  The novel has stood the test of time with themes that still resonate clearly today. Bram Stoker amplified fears in Victorian England in creating the horrors in Dracula: the fear of outsiders and immigration from Eastern Europe, the threat of women wanting equal rights (the women in Dracula are all images of the New Woman emerging at the turn of the century), and the tensions between the old and the new in a rapidly changing technological world.

Orson Welles’ radio play adaptation of Dracula is a masterpiece. First broadcast in 1938 to high acclaim, Welles’ Mercury Theatre on the Air adaptation of Dracula has been described as “a beautifully written piece, a memorable retelling of the eternal tale.  In fact, it is quite scary! A horrific, lusty, transcendent live wire of sound, Dracula is still modern today.”
