LOST TABLE READS

During the Covid-19 pandemic, LOST offered a series of Table Reads (via Zoom or in-person) as an opportunity not only to provide an artistic outlet for members and to continue community-building, but also to bring a play and its characters to life to better imagine the play as a possible future LOST production.  Post-pandemic, LOST has continued to organize in-person Table Reads to help in making decisions regarding the choice of play for its annual production.

Contact info@lawyersonstage.com for details.

To determine our December 2024 fundraising production, we organized four readings of plays being considered.

-1-

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

Ten strangers are trapped on an island. One by one, they are accused of murder. One by one, they start to die.

Full copy of the script available here.

Date: Wed 6 March 2024, 6.30-9.30 p.m.
RSVP by Sun 3 March for location details and further information

-2-

Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw

A brilliantly witty reworking of the classical tale of the sculptor Pygmalion, who falls in love with his perfect female statue. It is also a barbed attack on the British class system and a statement of Shaw’s feminist views.

RSVP by Sun 17 March for location details and further information

-3-

Radium Girls by D. W. Gregory

Full copy of the script is available here.

Date: Wed 3 April 2024, 6.30-9.30 p.m.
RSVP by Sun 31 March for location details and further information

-4-

Animal Farm by George Orwell (adapted by Ian Wooldridge)

George Orwell’s satire on the perils of Stalinism has proved magnificently long-lived as a parable about totalitarianism anywhere and has given the world at least one immortal phrase: “Some are more equal than others.”

Preview of the script available here (full version will be provided for the reading).

Date: Wed 17 April 2024, 6.30-9.30 p.m.

Table Reads Spring 2023

On Tues 21 March 2023, a group of approximately 20 actors from the local legal community gathered in the Victoria Courthouse Barrister’s Lounge to read the play Alice in Maryland (AiM), an original adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, Alice in Wonderland. AiM retains many of the colourful and well-known original characters, such as Alice, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, Humpty Dumpty, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, etc. It also contains musical numbers. AiM was devised and directed by Warwick Dobson, Professor Emeritus of the University of Victoria Theatre Department, for Authentic Community Theatre, Inc. in Maryland, USA in 2006. Warwick joined us at the LOST Table Read.

Table Reads Spring 2022

In Spring 2022, we invited actors from the local Victoria legal community to participate in the reading of two radio play versions of Bram Stoker’s Dracula at LOST Table Reads on Wed 13 April (by Philip Grecian) and Thurs 21 April (by Orson Welles).

The readings took place in the Barrister’s Lounge at the Victoria Courthouse, 7:00-10:00 pm.

The Table Reads were casual, fun theatre evenings, and hearing the two plays read out by wonderful local (legal) actors allowed us to assess which version we want to use for our annual December 2022 production and fundraiser (Orson Welles won out!).
